Claude Skills Starter Kit — Installation Guide

This pack includes 5 ready-to-use Claude Skills for everyday work:

1. email-drafter — write emails from short bullet points

What is a Claude Skill?

A Claude Skill is an instructions file (SKILL.md) that teaches Claude how to perform a specific task following your format and rules. When you ask Claude something that matches a skill's description, it automatically applies those instructions.

Installing — Claude Code (on your computer / terminal)

There are two options, depending on whether you want the skill available everywhere or just in one project.

A) User-level (works in every project)

1. Find your home directory (~) and the .claude/skills/ folder inside it. If it doesn't exist yet, create it:

   mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
   

2. Copy each skill's folder (e.g., email-drafter/) into ~/.claude/skills/, so the final path looks like:

   ~/.claude/skills/email-drafter/SKILL.md
   ~/.claude/skills/meeting-notes-to-action-items/SKILL.md
   ~/.claude/skills/social-caption-writer/SKILL.md
   ~/.claude/skills/seo-blog-outline/SKILL.md
   ~/.claude/skills/prompt-refiner/SKILL.md
   

3. Start (or restart) Claude Code — the skills will be available automatically in any project.

B) Single-project level

If you only want the skills available in one project, copy the same folders into <your-project>/.claude/skills/ (at the repo root) instead.

Using with claude.ai / Claude Desktop

1. Open Settings.
2. Find the Capabilities or Skills section (depending on your version).
3. Upload each skill's SKILL.md file, or its whole folder, using the "Upload" / "Add skill" button.
4. The skill will appear in your list of enabled capabilities and will trigger automatically when you ask something matching its description.

Using with ChatGPT

ChatGPT doesn't have a "Skills" system, but each SKILL.md file works just as well as ChatGPT instructions — the part below the --- frontmatter is plain instruction text.

As a Custom GPT (ChatGPT Plus/Team — stays saved for reuse):

1. Go to Explore GPTs → Create → Configure.
2. Give it a name (e.g., "Email Drafter") and a short description.
3. Open the skill's SKILL.md file, copy everything below the --- frontmatter block, and paste it into the Instructions field.
4. Save. Reopen this GPT any time you need that skill.

Without Custom GPT access (works on any ChatGPT plan): Paste the same instructions (below the frontmatter) at the start of a new chat, then ask your question. You'll need to re-paste it each time you start a new chat — this is the tradeoff without a saved Custom GPT.

How to check it's working

After installing, ask Claude a question that clearly matches one skill, for example:

"Write an email to a client reminding them about tomorrow's 2pm meeting."

If the skill triggered correctly, the answer will follow the email-drafter structure (subject line, greeting, clear call to action, etc.).

Common issues

• The skill doesn't trigger — check that the SKILL.md file is inside a folder, not just dropped directly into .claude/skills/ (the path must be .claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, not .claude/skills/<name>.md).
• Changes aren't showing up — after editing a file, you may need to restart your Claude Code session.
• Not sure which skill applies — ask specifically (e.g., "organize these meeting notes") rather than generically "help me" — skills trigger based on the scenarios described in their description.
