Beginner Skills Pack (50 Skills) / Setup guide
Beginner Skills Pack (50 Skills) — Installation Guide
This pack includes 50 original Claude Skills for common everyday tasks — writing, learning, planning, and organizing — grouped loosely into: everyday writing, learning, organizing, social messages, creative writing, research, career, travel, home/admin, and reflection.
Each skill lives in its own folder under skills/, e.g.
skills/thank-you-note-writer/SKILL.md.
What is a Claude Skill?
A Claude Skill is an instructions file (SKILL.md) that teaches Claude how
to perform a specific task following your format and rules. When you ask
Claude something that matches a skill's description, it automatically
applies those instructions — no special command needed.
Installing — Claude Code (on your computer / terminal)
A) User-level (works in every project) — recommended for this pack
- Create the skills folder if it doesn't exist yet:
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills - Copy all 50 folders from this pack's
skills/directory into~/.claude/skills/, so you end up with paths like:
The easiest way is to copy the whole~/.claude/skills/thank-you-note-writer/SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/apology-message-writer/SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/eli5-explainer/SKILL.md ... (50 total)skillsfolder and merge it:cp -r skills/* ~/.claude/skills/ - Start (or restart) Claude Code — all 50 skills are now available automatically, in any project.
B) Single-project level
Copy the same folders into <your-project>/.claude/skills/ instead, if
you only want them in one project.
Using with claude.ai / Claude Desktop
- Open Settings.
- Find Capabilities or Skills.
- Upload each skill folder (or its
SKILL.mdfile) using "Upload" / "Add skill." You can add them a few at a time — you don't need all 50 enabled if you only use some regularly.
Using with ChatGPT
ChatGPT doesn't have a "Skills" system, but every SKILL.md file in this
pack works just as well as ChatGPT instructions — the part below the
--- frontmatter is plain instruction text.
As a Custom GPT (ChatGPT Plus/Team — stays saved for reuse):
- Go to Explore GPTs → Create → Configure.
- Give it a name (e.g., "Thank-You Note Writer") and a short description.
- Open that skill's
SKILL.mdfile, copy everything below the---frontmatter block, and paste it into the Instructions field. - Save. You can create a GPT for each skill you use often, or combine a few related ones (e.g., all 5 "everyday writing" skills) into one GPT's instructions if you'd rather manage fewer GPTs.
Without Custom GPT access (works on any ChatGPT plan): Paste the same instructions (below the frontmatter) at the start of a new chat, then ask your question. You'll need to re-paste it each time you start a new chat.
How to check it's working
Ask Claude something that clearly matches one skill, for example:
"Write a thank-you message to my neighbor for watering my plants while I was away."
If it triggered correctly, the response will follow the
thank-you-note-writer structure (specific, not generic, matched to the
relationship).
Tips for this pack specifically
- You don't need to memorize all 50. Just ask naturally for what you
need — the right skill triggers based on its
description, not a command name. - Browse
skills/once to get a sense of what's covered, so you know what to ask for. - Common issue: if a skill doesn't trigger, check the file is at
.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md, not.claude/skills/<name>.mddirectly.
